A two day Strategic Review Meeting organized by the Ministry of Transport and its agencies is underway in Ho, in the Volta Region.
The Meeting themed “Review, Rethink and Reset the Transport Sector,” is to discuss interventions in the sector, identify areas of shortfalls, prioritise and reallocate resources for the effective implementation of programmes and projects.
The sector Minister Hon. Josphe Bukari Nikpe in his address reiterated that in achieving the Presidents vision of “Building The Ghana We Want” together, calls for the mordinisation and expansion of the transport sector in terms of infrastructure, services and regulations.
He outlined key initiatives undertaken in the first half of the year to include the restarting of the process for the establishment of a National Airline, repurposing of terminal two at Kotoka International Airport, commissioning of an Advanced Passenger Information system, the extension works on the runway at Prempeh Agyemang I International Airport, the development of regulations to strengthen oversight of commercial shipping space towards the operationalization of the Ghana Shippers Authority Act 2024 Act (1122)
He also mentioned the resumption of work on the Western Railway Line, the 24-Hour operations at the Tema and Takoradi Ports, clearing of backlog of 266,866 unprinted driver’s license cards amongst others.
Hon. Nikpe urged agencies and operators to prioritise inclusivity and ensure facilities are accessible to persons with disabilities.
The Volta Regional Minister, Hon. James Gunu, on his part described transport as central to national development and highlighted the potential of the Volta Lake Economic Corridor as a hub for aquaculture, inland water transport, and tourism.
He stressed the need for maintenance, enforcement of safety standards, and adoption of green technologies.
The Chief Director of the Ministry, Mrs. Mabel Sagoe, in a welcome address underscored the importance of the meeting as “we step back, reflect and delve deeper into challenges facing the sector”.
She urged all participants to fully participate in the discussions to unable the meeting come out with recommendations that will propel the Ministry and its agencies perform excellently.
The meeting featured panel discussions on the Aviation, Road Transport, Maritime and Inland and Railway sub sectors as well as key presentations from the Office of the Head of Civil Service and the Public Services Commission.
