Minister of Transport Hon. Kweku Ofori Asiamah together with officials of the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) and the Ministry visited the Wa Airstrip on Wednesday, 2nd June 2021.
The objective of the visit was to assess the danger posed to local flights by a telecommunication mast of a private institution, situated about 200 metres from the tarmac of the Wa Airstrip.
Hon. Kweku Ofori Asiamah, after an aerial viewing of the Airstrip, disclosed that discussions are on-going between himself and the Minister of Communications, Hon. Ursula Owusu on the telecommunication mast as it impedes the navigational route of commercial and other flights. A company can not be making profit at the expense of the safety of Ghanaians" he added.
Hon Kweku Ofori Asiamah observed that the apron is not in conformity with the International Civil Aviation Organisation(ICAO) standards and urged management of GCAA to as a matter of urgency, ensure the apron is refurbished to appropriate standards.
He expressed concern about the encroachment of land around the Airstrip and called on the Upper West Regional Minister, Hon. Dr. Hafiz Bin Salih to ensure the relocation of the encroachers .
In his response Dr. Hafiz indicated that the location of the telecommunication mast is an issue of concern to the chiefs and people of Wa, adding that "operation of the Wa Airstrip is my baby and I will not watct it die".
Wa Naa, Seidu Fuseini Pelpuo lV promised his unflinching support towards the operation of the Wa Airstrip.
