ASIKUMA INTERMODAL PROJECT TO STRENGTHEN TEMA PORT DECONGESTION AND CARGO MOVEMENT

16th Sep 2026 | PR UNIT

The Minister for Transport, Hon. Joseph Bukari Nikpe, has inspected the site earmarked for the development of a ramp port and cargo terminal at Asikuma in the Eastern Region, aimed at supporting the decongestion of the Tema Port and improving the movement of goods and passengers across the country.

The project, which forms part of Government’s broader vision of developing an efficient and integrated intermodal transport system, will include the construction of the ramp port, railway connection and a cargo terminal. The facility is expected to provide an alternative route for the movement of cargo from the Tema Port, helping to reduce pressure on the existing road network and improve the efficiency of freight transportation.

Speaking during the site inspection, Hon. Bukari Nikpe reiterated Government’s determination to establish a well-connected transport system in which road, rail and inland water transport complement each other to facilitate the movement of people and goods.

He explained that the full benefits of Government’s intermodal transport strategy would be realised when the various ongoing projects are completed and operationalised, particularly projects designed to connect major transport corridors and improve access to Ghana’s ports.

The Asikuma project is being undertaken by LMI Holdings as part of efforts to develop a multimodal logistics network that integrates rail, inland waterways and road transport. The development is expected to strengthen the connection between the Tema Port, inland destinations and our landlock neighbours via rail, inland waterways and road, while creating an efficient platform for the transfer of cargo.

Under the construction schedule, the ramp port and railway component are expected to be completed within a 24-month phase, while the cargo terminal is expected to be delivered within 36 months.

The Minister’s inspection forms part of the Ministry’s continued monitoring of strategic transport infrastructure projects intended to improve logistics efficiency, reduce congestion at our ports and roads and support economic activity.

Once completed and operational, the Asikuma project is expected to contribute to the development of a more integrated transport network, providing additional capacity for cargo movement and supporting Government’s broader objective of transforming Ghana’s transport sector into a more efficient and interconnected system.
