The Minister for Transport, hon. Kwaku Ofori Asiamah has said, government has placed premium on tackling challenges confronting the youth and fixing the challenge of youth unemployment, has been one of its primary concerns.

This, he stated, was critical because the youth formed the majority of the population of the country and government could not sit aloof without proffering solutions to issues that confronts them.

He said it was imperative to note that one of the surest ways of empowering the youth socially and economically was to establish facilities such as what was going to be commissioned to ensure that they spent their time profitably.

The Minister for Transport was speaking at the commissioning and handing over of the Nii Adjei Kraku II state-of-the-art Astro-Turf in Tema New Town, built by the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA) as part of their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR).

The Minister stated that it was worth mentioning that the construction of the facility was in tandem with government’s efforts at constructing Astro-Turfs across the country. “So far, more than thirty (30) brand new Astro-Turfs had been constructed by the government across the country with Adenta, Karaga, Yendi, Beposo, Bantama, Akyemansa, Mankessim, Adiembra and Tarkwa, to name but a few, as some of the beneficiary communities”, he added.

Hon. Kwaku Ofori Asiamah revealed, it was the belief of government that having such facilities spread across the country will significantly impact efforts at youth empowerment and ensure a healthy population through sports and games.

The Minister entreated other public sector agencies to emulate the example of the GPHA by reaching out to communities in their operational areas and lending support to them. This, he noted, will be taking care of the social needs of the people, while taking some of the burden off the shoulders of government.

Hon. Ofori Asiamah mentioned that the project had been successfully executed as a result of the high level of collaboration, cordial relationship and friendship that existed between the GPHA, the Chiefs and the people of Tema Newtown.

He stated that the facility will go a long way to inject additional impetus into the Tema Newtown community and become a catalyst that will enhance the quality of life for the people, especially the youth.

He implored the Traditional Council in whose hands the facility will be entrusted, to do all they could to ensure that it was maintained properly to guarantee a longer lifespan and raise some of the great players the country would need to play for the National teams.

The Minister said, he was aware that the GPHA had invested in other major CSR projects such as the renovation of educational facilities for some schools in Tema and also donated educational materials to schools across the country, from Tema through the middle belt all the way to the northern regions.

These, he reiterated, were deliberate efforts and initiatives by a government Agency aimed at enhancing the lives of Ghanaians and must be lauded and encouraged.

Hon. Ofori Asiamah commended the Board, Management and staff of the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority, for such laudable projects as part of their Corporate Social Responsibility drive on behalf of government.

The Nii Adjei Kraku II Sports Complex, comprises a world class Astro-Turf football field with sufficient illumination for night games, spectators stand, a multipurpose court for volley and basketball, tennis lawn, changing rooms, washrooms, and a children’s playground.
