The Ghana Ports and Habours Authority (GPHA) has assured that with immediate effect they were going to dedicate the berth 3 at the Tema Harbour to cement manufacturers who import clinker through the Tema port to disembark their clinker product.
They noted, priority was going to be given to ships that arrive with clinker so they can immediately start disembarking the products to avoid delay which often increases demurrage that affect the cost of producing cement which is further passed on to the consumer.
This was made known when the Minister for Transport, Hon. Kwaku Ofori Asiamah summoned a meeting of the GPHA and the Chamber of Cement Manufacturers, Ghana, to continue consultation on the measures to be adopted to get cost of cement production and its pricing reduced.
The Minister noted it was becoming worrisome how cement prices were increasing and they needed to take measures to quickly arrest the soaring prices. He added the Chamber of Cement Manufactures had complained shipping cost and delays at the port, were part of the reasons why production cost was going up which is affecting the prices of cement hence the increases.
He said the increase in cement prices affects the economy which would also increase the cost of building materials and in turn make building and renting of accommodation to increase astronomically.
He called on the GHPA to engage more with the Chamber of Cement Manufacturers, Ghana, to explore other measures that could also be implemented to reduce waiting time of vessels that bring in clinker, so that demurrage is avoided or reduced to make the cost of cement production and pricing also to reduce.
Hon. Ofori Asiamah called on the GPHA to be helping the cement manufacturers who bring in clinker through the Tema port with gangs where the need be, to disembark their products as quickly as possible to avoid unnecessary delays at the port and increases in demurrage. He added they should also supervise the cleaning of the port off possible environmental pollution that may be caused by the clinker.
“Let us find a better way of working effectively together so that we make the increasing prices of cement to reduce drastically. The increase affects every Ghanaian so we need to find innovative ways to quickly disembark clinker at the ports to prevent delays which can be controlled by the port”, the Minister added.
The Director for Ports at the GPHA Sandra Opoku who led the Port team and revealed that they would dedicate the berth 3 for clinker disembarking, noted they would continue engaging with the Chamber of Cement Manufacturers, Ghana, for them to find more innovative ways of disembarking clinker quickly.
Both the GHPA and the Chamber of Cement Manufacturers, Ghana, promised they would keep engaging and working together to come out with more measures that would help the Chamber in the disembarkment of clinker anytime they bring it in which would lead to the reduction of the cost in production and the prices of cement in the cou
