MINISTER OUTLINES AMBITIOUS PLAN TO MODERNISE GHANA'S TRANSPORT AND AVIATION SECTORS

17th Sep 2025 | PR Unit

The Minister for Transport, Hon. Joseph Nikpe Bukari, addressed the nation at the Government Accountability Series, providing a comprehensive update on key projects and strategic reforms.

His address painted a clear picture of a government committed to building a modern, efficient, and secure transport infrastructure that will serve as a backbone for national development and economic growth.

The centrepiece of the Minister's briefing was the strategic plan to establish a new national airline.

He said, “A dedicated 10-member task force has been assembled to oversee the project, with an inception report already submitted and an interim report expected soon. This project is a crucial step towards restoring Ghana's presence in the global aviation industry, with the dual aim of creating jobs and fostering greater connectivity.”

Further enhancing the nation’s aviation capacity, the Minister detailed a strategic plan to address persistent congestion at Kotoka International Airport (KIA) and relieve the pressure on the bustling Terminal 3.

“Terminal 2 is being repurposed into a flexible, dual-purpose facility that will handle both domestic and international flights. This move will optimise the use of existing infrastructure, improving efficiency and creating a more comfortable and streamlined experience for passengers.”

In a major move to enhance aviation safety, Hon. Nikpe indicated that construction of a new state-of-the-art Air Traffic Control Tower at KIA is now 20% complete and will be equipped with a visual control room, an approach radar room, and other advanced technical and operational spaces.

Its completion, according to him, will represent a significant leap forward in ensuring the safety and operational efficiency of Ghana's airspace.

The Minister also highlighted a recent triumph in national security with the official inauguration of the Advanced Passenger Information (API) & Passenger Name Record (PNR) System, which enables airlines and law enforcement agencies to exchange high-quality data in real time, helping to detect and deter high-risk travellers, combat terrorism, and prevent crime.

The Minister confirmed that nearly all airlines are now integrated into the platform, a testament to Ghana’s strengthened national security posture.

These projects, the Minister noted, are a clear indication of the government's commitment to building a robust and reliable transport network. The goal is to lay the foundation for a future where Ghana's transport infrastructure meets the needs of its citizens and serves as a catalyst for sustainable economic development.
