16th Aug 2025 | PR Unit

In a significant step toward transforming the nation's transportation landscape, a 10-member Technical Committee has been inaugurated to oversee the modernization and development of Ghana's railway infrastructure.

The committee's primary focus will be on the Western Railway Line and the Tema-Mpakadan Railway Line.

The inaugural ceremony highlighted the government's commitment to enhancing regional connectivity and stimulating economic growth through a modernized railway network. The committee's work is seen as a catalyst for national transformation, aiming to improve the quality of life for citizens, create jobs, and foster sustainable economic development.

During the event, the Minister of Transport, Hon. Joseph Bukari Nikpe emphasized the government's resolve. "The establishment of this committee is a testament to our commitment to addressing the challenges and embracing the opportunities within our transport sector," the minister stated, "and we are confident that this collaborative effort will yield transformative results for our nation."

The newly formed committee is tasked with a comprehensive mandate to ensure the effective and transparent execution of these critical projects. Key responsibilities include:

  • Procuring a Transaction Advisor to guide the committee's work.
  • Evaluating proposals from potential strategic investors and technical partners.
  • Coordinating engagements with private sector partners.
  • Overseeing the selection process for operators of the Tema-Mpakadan Railway Line.
  • Managing the procurement process for partners to complete the Western Railway Line, in compliance with the PPP Act 2020 (Act 1039).

In his remarks as the chair of the committee, Dr. Frederick Appoh articulated the view that a revitalized public-private partnership model is instrumental for the efficient and accelerated development of the rail sector.

Other members of the committee include representatives from the GRDA, the Ministry of Transport, the Ministry of Finance, and the Office of the Attorney-General and Ministry of Justice.

The GRDA will also host the committee's secretariat, providing the necessary logistical support.
