The Minister for Transport, Hon. Joseph Bukari Nikpe, during a working visit to the Ghana Railway Development Authority (GRDA) addressed the ongoing destruction of railway lines caused by encroachment and illegal mining activities.
He expressed concern over the damage to railway infrastructure, particularly in the Western Region, and emphasised the urgent need to reclaim all encroached railway lands.
“A joint operation to reclaim all encroached railway lands is being actively pursued, while efforts are underway to increase patronage of the Tema-Mpakadan shuttle services. I spoke with National Security this morning, and I can assure you that very soon, you'll see action. I cannot sit and allow such a national infrastructure to be hijacked by nation wreckers. I'm taking decisive action now”.
Addressing concerns regarding stalled railway projects, the Minister explained that many contractors had suspended work due to uncertainties surrounding government payments. He reassured them that the government was committed to settling outstanding debts and would engage with contractors to resume work.
Regarding the issue of employees' salary arrears, he assured the workers that efforts were being made to resolve the matter, with ongoing discussions involving key stakeholders, including the Ministry of Finance.
The Acting Chief Executive Officer of GRDA welcomed the minister’s visit, highlighting that it provided an opportunity to assess ongoing projects and address critical challenges.
He emphasised the urgent need for action to tackle issues affecting rail operations, including illegal activities along railway lands and financial constraints.
