4th Oct 2018 | Ministry of Transport PR Unit

Government is committed to building capacities of Road Safety institutions in creating awareness of the dangers on the road. A Policy proposal seeking to empower the National Road Safety Commission (NRSC) to ensure compliance of road safety policies, measures and guidelines is currently before cabinet.

Deputy Minister for Transport, Hon. Daniel Nii Kwartei Titus-Glover made this know during the inaugural ceremony for Road Safety Goodwill Ambassadors, Advocates and Communication Team, in Accra, today, Thursday, September 27, 2018.

He stated that road traffic crashes continue to pose challenges to the socioeconomic development of the country as an average of six road traffic deaths are recorded daily.

“According to NRSC, as of August this year, 8,874 Road traffic crashes had been reported, leading to 1,546 deaths and 8,674 injuries. This is a matter of serious concern to government which needs to be addressed urgently”, he added.

Road Safety, he stated, requires a multi-disciplinary approach that combines engineering, enforcement, emergency services and education to achieve desired results and that it is important to reach out to the various sections of society through faces and voices that are highly admired and respected, to augment the effort of the NRSC.

Hon. Titus-Glover mentioned that a blend of unique faces and voices of nobility would enhance the ability to influence the thinking, attitude, reaction and support for varied segment of society.

He commended the team for accepting to serve Ghana as advocates, ambassadors and communicators and urged them to improve the road safety situation of the country.

Present at the inaugural ceremony were the First Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Right Hon.
